UAE’s MBZ-SAT Set for Launch to Space on January 14 from California-Themagalogue

The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) has revealed that the UAE’s cutting-edge Earth-imaging satellite, MBZ-SAT, is scheduled for launch on Tuesday, January 14, at 10:49 PM UAE time. The historic launch will take place at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, USA, marking a significant milestone in the UAE’s growing space capabilities. This highly advanced satellite is expected to offer unprecedented insights into Earth observation, enhancing the nation’s technological prowess and global space presence.
This marks the exciting milestone of the second satellite created entirely by a skilled team of Emirati engineers, showcasing their innovation and expertise. In an impressive feat of technology, this satellite will be launched alongside the cutting-edge CubeSat, HCT-SAT 1, a compact yet powerful marvel in the world of space exploration.
MBZ-SAT, initially slated for launch in October 2024 aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, encountered setbacks when technical challenges grounded the mission. Weighing 700 kg, the satellite faced delays in its journey to space. However, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) has found an alternative route for the satellite, opting for SpaceX’s rideshare program to carry MBZ-SAT into orbit, ensuring its mission progresses despite the earlier complications.

Launched in 2019, the SpaceX rideshare program revolutionized the space industry by providing an affordable solution to high-cost traditional launch services. With its innovative approach, the program has already played a pivotal role in successfully deploying more than 200 satellites, offering businesses and organizations a reliable and cost-efficient way to access space.
In a recent press briefing, Salem Humaid Al Marri, the Director-General of MBRSC, highlighted the relentless dedication of their teams, stating, “A seven-member team is stationed in the US, while another is working tirelessly at our Mission Control in Dubai, ensuring that every detail is meticulously prepared for the upcoming launch.” His remarks underscored the commitment and collaborative effort required to make the mission a success, with both teams working around the clock to guarantee that everything is set for the launch.
MBZ-SAT, a groundbreaking Earth observation satellite named after President Sheikh Mohamed, promises to revolutionize satellite imaging with unparalleled capabilities. This ambitious project not only enhances the nation’s technological frontiers but also highlights the UAE’s dedication to empowering future space pioneers. The UAE is making remarkable strides in space exploration with a fleet of 10 operational satellites, each serving a unique and essential purpose. An additional eight satellites are currently under construction, further expanding the country’s space capabilities. Among these, the MBZ-SAT stands out with its cutting-edge, fully automated image scheduling and processing system. This advanced technology enables MBZ-SAT to produce 10 times more images than the MBRSC’s current output, significantly enhancing the nation’s satellite imaging capacity and contributing to its ambitious space goals.
Once fully assembled in the UAE, the artificial satellite underwent an extensive series of scientific tests to ensure its functionality. Following this meticulous evaluation, it was securely packed into a specialized container equipped with an advanced monitoring system, guaranteeing its protection throughout the transportation process.
Amer AlSayegh AlGhaferi, project manager for the MBZ-SAT, shared that the satellite was first sent to South Korea for rigorous environmental testing, conducted in close partnership with the logistical team at MBRSC. After successfully completing the testing phase in South Korea, the MBZ-SAT was then shipped to SpaceX in the United States, where it underwent its final round of testing before being prepared for its upcoming launch.
Marri highlighted the significance of this remarkable achievement, calling it a source of immense pride for all in the UAE.
The HCT-SAT programme stands as a remarkable achievement, showcasing both the advancement of satellite technology and a commitment to education. By building a large satellite with years of expertise, the initiative also focuses on nurturing the next generation of space professionals. It successfully reached every emirate in the UAE, engaging approximately 50 students, an accomplishment the team takes immense pride in.
