Ajith Kumar Honored with Padma Bhushan by President Droupadi Murmu at 2025 Ceremony

Tamil cinema icon Ajith Kumar was conferred with the prestigious Padma Bhushan—India’s third-highest civilian award—by President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on April 28. Recognised for his remarkable contributions to Indian cinema, Ajith stood among 19 distinguished personalities selected for this honour by the Union Government, as announced earlier in January. The ceremony marked a moment of national pride and celebration for the actor’s enduring impact on the film industry and his influence beyond the silver screen.

With a remarkable journey that spans over 30 years, Ajith Kumar has firmly established himself as a powerhouse in Indian cinema, boasting an impressive filmography of over 60 titles. His cinematic voyage began with a small role in En Veedu En Kanavar (1990), before stepping into the spotlight as a lead in Amaravathi (1993). Initially captivating audiences with his romantic portrayals, Ajith later reinvented his screen persona at the dawn of the new millennium, emerging as a formidable action icon through memorable performances in films such as Amarkalam, Dheena, and Citizen.

Renowned for his powerful screen presence, Ajith Kumar has firmly established himself as a cornerstone of Tamil cinema with blockbuster hits like Varalaaru, Billa, and Mankatha, each showcasing his versatility and mass appeal. Honored with the prestigious Kalaimamani award and a three-time recipient of the Tamil Nadu State Film Award, Ajith’s cinematic journey reflects both critical acclaim and audience admiration. Most recently, he captivated viewers with his roles in Vidaamuyarchi, helmed by Magizh Thirumeni, and Good Bad Ugly, directed by Adhik Ravichandran—further reaffirming his status as one of the industry’s most enduring icons.

In January, Ajith Kumar graciously acknowledged the prestigious Padma Award bestowed upon him by the Government of India, expressing heartfelt appreciation for the national recognition. In a reflective note, he conveyed his sincere thanks to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that the honour deeply humbled him. He emphasized that while he is personally grateful for the award, it also represents the shared dedication, encouragement, and contributions of many who have stood by him throughout his journey. For Ajith, this accolade is not merely a personal milestone but a symbol of collective achievement and national pride.

Balancing a dynamic career both on and off the track, the multifaceted star continues to impress—not only as a celebrated motorsport racer and team owner but also as a State-level shooting champion. Adding another feather to his cap, his racing outfit, Ajith Kumar Racing, clinched an impressive second-place finish at the iconic Spa Francorchamps circuit in Belgium on April 20, marking a significant milestone in their international journey.

At the prestigious Padma Awards ceremony, the spotlight shone on several distinguished figures from the film industry. Acclaimed actor and politician Nandamuri Balakrishna, along with legendary filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, were honored with the Padma Bhushan, celebrating their enduring contributions to Indian cinema and culture. Joining them in this esteemed recognition, veteran actor Anant Nag and celebrated actress-dancer Shobana Chandrakumar also received the Padma Bhushan, while internationally renowned music composer Ricky Kej was bestowed with the Padma Shri, marking a proud moment for the creative arts community.

Renowned Malayalam literary icon and celebrated screenwriter M. T. Vasudevan Nair, who left an indelible mark on Indian literature and cinema, has been honoured posthumously with the prestigious Padma Vibhushan award. The recognition, bestowed after his passing at the age of 91 last year, celebrates his profound contribution to storytelling and cultural heritage. He shares this distinguished accolade with the legendary late singer Pankaj Udhas, further underscoring the nation’s gratitude to its artistic stalwarts.

The Padma Awards—one of India’s most prestigious civilian honors—are presented annually in three distinguished categories: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri. These accolades recognize exceptional contributions across a broad spectrum of fields such as the arts, social service, public administration, science and technology, business, and more. Celebrating excellence and dedication, the awards serve as a tribute to individuals whose work has significantly enriched the nation’s cultural, intellectual, and social fabric.
