Dr. V. Narayanan to Lead ISRO’s Next Frontier as Chief and Secretary


Dr. V. Narayanan has been appointed as the new Space Secretary, a pivotal role in shaping India’s space exploration future. Currently serving as the Director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC), Dr. Narayanan brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the position. In addition to his new responsibilities as Space Secretary, he will also step into the role of ISRO Chairman, succeeding the outgoing S. Somanath. Dr. Narayanan will officially assume these key positions starting January 14, marking a significant milestone in India’s space program leadership.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has officially sanctioned the appointment of V. Narayanan, the current Director at the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre in Valiamala, as the new Secretary of the Department of Space and Chairman of the Space Commission. This prestigious position, which will be effective from January 14, 2025, is set for a duration of two years, or until further instructions are issued, as per the official order from the Ministry of Personnel and Training.
Dr. Narayanan, a distinguished expert in rocket and spacecraft propulsion, embarked on his remarkable journey with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in 1984. Over the years, he held several key positions, contributing significantly to the organisation’s advancements. His expertise and leadership culminated in his appointment as the Director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC), where he continued to steer groundbreaking innovations in the space exploration sector.
At the outset of his career, he made notable contributions to the development of Solid Propulsion systems for Sounding Rockets, as well as the Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle (ASLV) and Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). His expertise further extended to ISRO’s prestigious Geosynchronous launch vehicles, where he played a crucial role in advancing the GSLV Mk-II and GSLV Mk-III. His work has been instrumental in shaping key milestones in India’s space exploration endeavors.
Dr. Narayanan, Chairman of the National Expert Committee assigned to investigate the hard-landing of the Chandrayaan-2 lander, played a pivotal role in identifying the underlying causes and outlining the necessary corrective measures to address the challenges. His expertise was further demonstrated through the successful design and delivery of all Propulsion Systems for the Chandrayaan-3 mission, ensuring its readiness for success.
Taking the helm from Mr. Somanath, who played a pivotal role in overseeing monumental milestones such as the successful Chandrayaan-3 mission, the Aditya L1 launch, and the first developmental flight of the Gaganyaan mission, this new leader brings a wealth of experience and vision.
